Facing a three-stroke deficit heading into the day, Shah, a rising sophomore at Quinnipiac University battled to the top of the leaderboard during the second round of play. Three opening birdies got momentum rolling for Shah, who finished out her front nine with four consecutive pars to get to 2-under par.
“Going into this tournament I said, ‘I’m just going to go and play my game,’” Shah said. “Not going for birdies, and just making pars. If the birdies came, I’d take it, but it was just about staying in the game overall.”
The Bridgewater-native countered an opening bogey on No. 10 with a solid finish through the remainder of her back nine. With birdies on holes 12 and 17, two par-fives that are 456 and 496-yards, respectively, Shah took a strong lead going into the final hole. With her dad caddying alongside her, Shah closed out the championship with a winning par putt on No. 18.
“It’s amazing,” Shah remarked. “The sacrifices that my dad and I made, also my mom and my sister that were not here today. With the amount of hard work that we have put in, it’s just amazing to feel that I got this thing done.”
The Bedens Brook Club, which played 6,089-yards on Wednesday afternoon, was a fair test for Shah, who felt that her short game suited well with the course.
“On this course, short game was key,” Shah said. “I felt like my approach shots were good,” she continued.
Megan Meng, a rising sophomore out of Northwestern University, finished in solo second place. She fired in a 3-under second round to get to 1-under overall (75-70, 145).
In her first tournament as a professional, Katie Lu, of the NJ Golf E-Club, wasthe low professional, carding an even-par 146 over 36 holes.
