New Jersey Golf Mourns the Passing of Doug Steffen

KENILWROTH, N.J. - New Jersey Golf is saddened to learn of the passing of Doug Steffen, a respected leader in the game and longtime member of the professional staff at Baltusrol Golf Club. Steffen passed away on April 2, 2026, following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

A New Jersey PGA Hall of Fame inductee, Steffen’s career spanned decades and left a lasting imprint on the state’s golf community. His association with Baltusrol began in 1977, when he joined as an assistant professional, and evolved into a distinguished tenure that included 20 years as Director of Golf. Over the course of his career, he became known not only for his expertise, but for his steady leadership, humility, and deep respect for the game.

Steffen’s impact extended far beyond club operations. A talented player in his own right, he qualified for the U.S. Open in 1975 and competed in multiple major championships, including the PGA Championship and Senior U.S. Open. He also enjoyed significant success at the state and sectional levels, capturing multiple titles including the New Jersey Senior Open and earning numerous honors from the PGA of America, highlighted by New Jersey Section Golf Professional of the Year recognition in 2008 and 2016.

His contributions to the game in New Jersey were equally meaningful off the course. Steffen played a key role in bringing major PGA Section events to Baltusrol and helped establish the club as the longtime host of the New Jersey Golf Foundation’s flagship fundraising event. He was also a dedicated supporter of Baltusrol’s caddie program, earning the respect of generations of young golfers through his mentorship and example.

Steffen’s influence was recognized by his peers through numerous awards, including the Bill Strausbaugh Award for mentoring and community service. In 2007, he was honored nationally as the PGA of America Merchandiser of the Year, a testament to his professionalism and innovative approach within the industry.

Above all, Steffen will be remembered for the way he carried himself—with quiet confidence, generosity, and a genuine care for others. His legacy lives on through the many players, professionals, and colleagues he guided throughout his career, and through the enduring impact he made on the game in New Jersey.

New Jersey Golf extends its deepest condolences to Doug’s wife, Regina, his daughter Emily, granddaughter Brooke, and the entire Steffen family.
