Inaugural Amateur Champions Dinner Commemorates 125 Years of Championship History
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. –– In a room filled with past champions spanning nearly seven decades, the history of the New Jersey Amateur Championship was impossible to miss.
On June 30, New Jersey Golf hosted its Inaugural Amateur Champions Dinner at Baltusrol Golf Club, bringing together past winners to celebrate 125 years of one of the state’s most storied championships.
From champions crowned in the 1950s to the tournament’s most recent winners, the evening served as both a celebration of the championship’s rich history and a tribute to the players who helped shape it.
With the 125th New Jersey Amateur Championship set for July 6-8 at Baltusrol, the gathering carried added significance as past champions returned to one of the state’s most iconic venues. A club synonymous with championship golf, Baltusrol provided the perfect backdrop for an evening centered on tradition, legacy and the enduring prestige of the Amateur Championship.
A cross-section of champions from multiple generations filled the room.
Lloyd Monroe, the oldest champion in attendance, represented the earliest years of the tournament, having captured his first title in 1958 at Montclair Golf Club. He was joined by fellow competitors including six-time winner Robert (Bob) Housen, and Billy Ziobro, the second player to win the New Jersey Amateur and Open Championships in the same year.
“I’m seeing people that I knew a long time ago, and it’s really fun,” Monroe said.
“It just feels good to be remembered,” he added.
The evening also served as a bridge between the championship's history and its future.
Recent champions in attendance included Jack Wall (2023), Austin Devereux (2020) and Dylan Stein (2018).
Defending champion Barnes Blake attended the event with a unique opportunity ahead: defending his title on his home course.
Blake said competing at Baltusrol with the support of family, friends, and club members will make the week especially meaningful.
“It's just incredible to see everyone here and how it brings everyone together,” Blake said. “It’s a really special moment for me and I’m really happy I was able to make it.”
2012 Amateur Champion Ryan McCormick entered the evening as the most recent player to win the championship at Baltusrol.
"I take great pride in being from New Jersey and representing it wherever I play,” said McCormick, who has competed on both the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour. “To come back and be part of this group of champions is special.”
The evening also featured Brian Komline, the only player in NJ Golf history to complete the Grand Slam by winning the Open, Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Four-Ball and Public Links Championships.
For many in attendance, the evening was more than revisiting past victories. It was about reconnecting with the championship’s legacy and the people who helped build it.
For 1998 champion Mike Hyland, the gathering underscored the unique bond shared by Amateur champions across generations.
“I haven’t been back to Baltusrol in a long time,” Hyland remarked. “But it’s unbelievable. Being in this room with these guys is just incredible.”
Hyland returns to the field as a former champion at Baltusrol and is especially excited to share the experience with his son, who will caddie for him.
“Baltusrol is one of my favorite places in New Jersey,” Hyland said. “It means so much to me to come back here and be invited here for tonight.”
2002 champion Corey Bringham echoed Hyland’s sentiments about the night.
“It’s super cool,” Bringham said. “To see all these guys who I haven’t seen in a long time, it’s a really nice thing.”
As the 125th New Jersey Amateur Championship approaches, the Inaugural Champions Dinner served as a reminder of what makes the event special.
For 125 years, the championship has connected generations of New Jersey golfers through competition, tradition and unforgettable moments. At Baltusrol, past champions gathered to celebrate that history, while the next chapter waits to be written next week.
