Hollywood Awaits as NJ Golf, GAP Gear Up for 63rd Compher Cup

DEAL, N.J. - New Jersey Golf will square off against the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) on Wednesday, April 30, at Hollywood Golf Club in the 63rd installment of the Compher Cup Match.

In 2024, NJ Golf captured the Compher Cup on GAP soil for the first time in two decades, earning a decisive 13.5–4.5 victory at Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. It marked the first road win over GAP since 2004, when they prevailed at Bent Creek Country Club.

Scoring

Meet Team NJ Golf

For the competition, each association fields a team of 12 of its top amateur golfers who compete in simultaneous Four-Ball (team) and individual matches. Each match is worth one point; a total of 18 points are at stake. Any match which ends in a tie results in a half-point awarded to each side. The team with the greatest number of points wins, and if the match is tied, the Cup remains with the defending champions.

The Compher Cup was held for the first time in 1962 and is named for former NJSGA president, Frederic Compher, who donated the championship cup and conceived the idea of an interdistrict match with GAP to foster camaraderie and friendly competition between the associations. It has been held every year since, except for 2020 due to the pandemic (COVID-19).

The New Jersey Golf team enters the competition with strong leadership and proven talent. Captain Eric LeFante brings experience and consistency, having reached the Round of 16 in both the Mid-Amateur and Four-Ball Championships in 2024, along with a T-5 finish at the Amateur and a top-25 showing in the Open. Joining him is 2024 New Jersey Golf Player of the Year Troy Vannucci, who delivered standout performances last season—including a T-4 at the Open Championship at Plainfield, a T-6 at the Amateur, and a quarterfinal run in the Mid-Amateur.

Gregg Angelillo, Austin Devereux and Chester Patterson are also members of the team who saw success in 2024, winning New Jersey titles. Angelillo, of Baltusrol Golf Club won the Senior Open as well as the Pre-Senior Championship for the fourth time. Devereux, a past New Jersey Amateur Champion took home the Mid-Amateur Championship at Union League National, while Patterson claimed the Four-Ball Championship at Hollywood.
