Gotterup Debuts, Greyserman Returns to Augusta National

Gotterup Debuts, Greyserman Returns to Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The road from New Jersey to Augusta National isn’t a common one. This week, two players with Garden State roots are walking it, each arriving by a very different path, but with something meaningful to prove.

For Chris Gotterup, it’s a first look at the biggest stage in golf. For Max Greyserman, it’s another opportunity, this time with experience behind him.

A Little Silver native and the 2019 New Jersey Open champion, Gotterup’s rise has been anything but accidental. His journey began in New Jersey, sharpened at Rutgers University, and ultimately elevated at University of Oklahoma, a transition he credits as a turning point in his development.

That progression has carried into the professional ranks, where Gotterup has quickly found his footing. Now ranked No. 11 in the Official World Golf Rankings, he arrives at the Masters Tournament as one of the game’s emerging players, and one of 22 making their debut this week.

The results speak for themselves. Gotterup is already a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including two victories this season, a rapid ascent that has put him firmly among the game’s elite heading into Augusta.

“Just embracing the whole experience and trying to take it all in, enjoy it, while also trying to go out there and compete and give it everything I got,” Gotterup said in his Monday interview at Augusta National.

There’s a grounded confidence in how he approaches Augusta. Not naïve to the moment, but not overwhelmed by it either.

“If I feel like I’m striking it well, I feel like I can play anywhere," Gotterup added.

That belief is rooted in a steady climb through the professional ranks, learning how to win, how to travel, and how to handle the grind.

“It’s been a fun ride the last year or so… hopefully keep it going,” he said.

That mindset has been built over time, from grinding through developmental tours like the Korn Ferry to learning the realities of life on the road.

“I felt like I was prepared by the time I left Oklahoma as much as I could be, but pro golf, there’s a lot of learning curves. I felt like that was all a learning process for me.”

The nerves, he admits, will come, but they’re rooted in excitement more than anything else.

“I think I’m going to be nervous on the first tee, just because it’s something different that I haven’t experienced before. It's more the first experience rather than the golf course.”

Greyserman’s week carries a different tone. The Short Hills native returns to Augusta National Golf Club for his second Masters appearance, no longer seeing it solely through the lens of a first-timer. His game, and perspective, have evolved.

Greyserman’s path has been steady and deliberate. A standout junior in New Jersey, he captured the 2014 New Jersey Open and followed it with a victory at the 2015 New Jersey Amateur, early markers of a player capable of competing at the highest level. He went on to star at Duke University before working his way through professional golf’s proving grounds.

Where Gotterup arrives riding momentum, Greyserman leans on experience, understanding how demanding Augusta can be, and how quickly it can expose any weakness. In 2025, Greyserman finished T-32, carding rounds of 71-75-69-74.

Now, with one Masters already behind him, Greyserman gets another shot, this time with a clearer picture of what it takes to compete.
