Glen Ridge Country Club Hosts U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifier

GLEN RIDGE, N.J. –– Marianne Springer out of Wellington, Florida finished 8-over par 79, earning medalist honors at Glen Ridge Country Club on Monday. Four individuals who shot 17-over par 88 or better advanced to the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship set for Sept. 13-18 at The Omni Homestead Resort (Cascades Course) in Hot Springs, Va. Two players out of New Jersey, Maricel Gorczynski (Branchburg) and Meral Malady (Mountain Lakes) also made the cut.
Springer bested the field by four strokes, and tallied 10 pars and one birdie, on the 343-yard par-4 7th hole to earn medalist honors. Close behind Springer was Alejandra Partearroyo-Hilman, or Greenwich, Conn. with a 12-over par 83 to take the solo second place spot.
Gorczynski shot a 13-over par 84 to take the solo third place spot on the leaderboard Monday afternoon. With Glen Ridge C.C. playing 5,604 yards on Monday, she carded in five pars and a key birdie on the 460-yard par 5 8th hole to round out her score.
“My long game was pretty good,” Gorczynski said following her round. “It was narrow. I think my drives were pretty much always in the fairway, so that helped."
Malady, out of Baltusrol Golf Club, shot a 17-over par 88 to advance to the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur on Monday. In a two-for-one playoff, Malady bested Aidong Ma to take the final qualifying spot.
“I'm excited,” Malady said. “This is my third time trying. Everybody says, ‘you can go, you should go.’ I've been trying. So, I’m really excited that I held on enough to get in there today.”
Malady carded in five pars to help advance her to playoff contention.
“The course played really fast,” Malady continued. “The greens were fast and some of my shots were not my best, but luckily on the last hole I had a couple of good ones and I was able to pull it out, so I’m just excited.”
The U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship is set for Sept. 13-18 at The Omni Homestead Resort (Cascades Course) in Hot Springs, Va.
“I’ve just heard that the whole atmosphere is electric and that it's just a really amazing experience,” Malady said. “I have no idea what it’s like so I’m just looking forward to seeing it.”
“Just being able to say that you went to a USGA event is a special thing,” Malady finished.
Following the playoff, Ma, of Bridgewater, N.J, took the first alternate spot. Amy Bender (Ardsley on Hudson, NY) took the second alternate spot.
