WAYNE, N.J.- Battling through torrential rain, Henry Bolster and Sean Vowells of Canoe Brook Country Club emerged victorious at the 93rd New Jersey Four-Ball Championship at North Jersey Country Club.
“I'm happy it's over, but I'm glad it happened,” a drenched Vowells expressed. “It was a mental test more than anything today. We just thought that if we try and put ourselves in good position every hole, it would probably come down to a few putts, and that's what it ended up doing.”
After winning their morning semifinal match against Zachary Pallis and Bradley Lankler, 3 and 2, the pair went on to defeat brothers Jeremy and Ethan Wall, 3 and 2 in the finale.
Bolster, 18, and Vowells, 24, built a bond at Canoe Brook, and used that connection to take down the talented Wall brothers.
“We're just amped up,” said Bolster following their victory. "Sean and I have been close friends for over seven years now. I give Sean a lot of credit to my game - he taught me how to play tournament golf and it's awesome to be here with him and get this done.”
In stroke play qualifying, Bolster and Vowells turned in a 4-under par 67 to earn the 6 seed.
The championship match tilted in Bolster and Vowells’ favor early. After tying the first two holes, they captured No. 3 with a birdie, then went on to win holes 5 through 7 to take a 3-up lead. They made the turn with that advantage just as the weather began to deteriorate. Despite worsening conditions, Bolster drained a clutch birdie putt on No. 11 to extend their momentum. Play was then suspended on No. 12 as heavy rain left standing water across the course. After the delay, the Wall brothers mounted a comeback, winning holes 14 and 15 to cut the deficit to 2 down with three to play. Battling through the rain, Bolster and Vowells sealed the match with a par on No. 16.
“It was a mental test out there in these conditions with torrential rain for a majority of the time,” said Bolster. “We were just leaning on each other and relying on ham and egg golf out there. The Wall brothers played great rounds. A few putts of theirs didn't drop, but it was awesome playing against them.”
With the win, Bolster and Vowells receive an exemption into the championship for the next three years.
