Lisa Duo Wins in Playoff at 104th Father & Son Championship presented by McRae Capital Management
PRINCETON, N.J. –– Kyle and Mark Lisa, representing Ballyowen Golf Club, captured the 104th Father & Son Championship in dramatic fashion Monday, firing a 5-under-par 66 before defeating George and John Clarke in a sudden-death playoff at Springdale Golf Club.
The Lisas got off to a strong start, posting a bogey-free front nine highlighted by three birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 9 on Springdale’s 6,164-yard course.
“He bombs the ball, so it’s amazing to hit from spots that I get to hit from for him,” Mark Lisa said. “I had a lot of wedges into greens and I was able to help us get it a little closer. He putted very well. So, you need both of those.”
After a bogey on the 185-yard par-3 11th, the Lisas responded with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15 to surge back up the leaderboard.
“I think all three birdies were probably inside of four feet, so there wasn’t much work for me to do other than hitting the tee ball and tapping in a birdie,” Kyle Lisa said. “It was my driving, his irons and wedges. We just kind of complemented each other.”
The three-birdie stretch moved the Lisas to 5-under par and into the clubhouse lead, but the Clarkes matched their score to force a playoff.
The sudden-death playoff lasted just one hole. On the 364-yard par-4 first hole, the Lisas capped their long-awaited championship with another birdie to secure the victory.
“This is our number one most cherished tournament of the year,” Mark Lisa said. “We finally dotted the I’s and crossed the T’s, and we’re very excited to do this together.”
For both, the victory was especially meaningful after years of competing alongside each other.
“It’s an honor that I get to play with him basically every Sunday now, and we get to play in this every year,” Kyle Lisa said. “It’s a relief to finally win, and we finally played to our caliber. It feels good to finally close the door.”
The Lisas finished at 7-under-par 64 to claim the championship and finish atop the Net leaderboard.
