Kortina Secures 16th Super Senior at Hawk Pointe Golf Club
WASHINGTON, N.J. –– Jeff Kortina of Oak Hill Golf Club took home the 16th Super Senior Championship with a 2-over-par 74 at Hawk Pointe Golf Club on Oct. 13.
Despite a short weather delay due to heavy fog, Kortina got off to a strong start, recording two birdies in his first four holes before a stretch of three consecutive bogeys slowed his momentum. He regrouped and settled into a steady run of pars through the front nine to keep himself in the lead.
“I've had a pattern in the past where it's sometimes hard to get off the bogey train, and you start thinking about it,” Kortina said. “Then I stabilized things and made a bunch of pars.”
Kortina never relinquished control of his lead throughout the day and closed out a steady round with a par on No. 10 to finish at 2-over total, holding off the rest of the field to secure his first individual NJ Golf title.
The 67-year-old credited his instructor, Ed Whitman, a four-time New Jersey Open champion, for helping him reach the milestone after Kortina sought out Whitman for lessons to help improve his swing.
“He told me two and a half years ago that it was going to take two years to fix my swing, and this is proof that I'm going in the right direction,” Kortina said.
A longtime participant in NJ Golf tournaments since the 1980s, Kortina has enjoyed success in team competition, helping Oak Hill win the Senior Interclub Championship in 2016 and 2025. Tuesday's victory marked a new milestone in his golf career.
“It's taken a long time, but it's just a wonderful feeling,” Kortina said.
With a short drive to Hawk Pointe from home, Kortina enjoyed a memorable day on a familiar course.
“I just kind of had a feeling it might all come together today,” Kortina said.
In the Net Division, Mike Denise of The Golf Mission secured the win with a 3-under par 69.
