John and Jason Welch Claim 2nd Parent-Child Championship
TRENTON, N.J. - Posting a net score of 3-under par 68, the father-and-son duo of John and Jason Welch captured the 2nd Parent-Child Championship at Trenton Country Club, earning the Net Division title on a USGA match of cards. Representing Metedeconk National Golf Club, the pair also claimed the Gross Division title after carding a 1-under-par 70.
For the second consecutive year, the Welches found themselves atop the Gross Division leaderboard, successfully defending the title they won at the inaugural Parent-Child Championship in 2025. After finishing as the runners-up in the Net Division a year ago, the duo returned to Trenton Country Club and added that championship to their growing resume.
“Really staying in it and not giving up is the biggest thing,” said father Jason Welch. “We have a great relationship as father and son, we play a lot of rounds of golf together, so we know each other's games. We've obviously played in a lot of these tournaments, so we're used to our games. We feed off each other's game. It's nothing better than playing with your son.”
The Welches put together another impressive performance, recording four birdies during their gross round, with three coming on the back nine as they pulled away from the field to win by six strokes.
“I think our birdies on 15 and 16, back-to-back, that got us in it,” said John Welch. We were playing okay till that point; we made a tough bogey on 13. A par on 14, which was a tough hole, and I hit one close in on 15, Dad made a putt on 16.”
The father-and-son pairing also excelled in the Net Division, where a steady round and strong teamwork helped them edge the competition. They finished ahead of three teams tied atop thanks to a match of cards, which looked at their back nine scores.
“It's hard in alternate shot to hold each other accountable and stay in every hole," added John. I think we did a good job of that today. Every time we had adversity, we came back."
Their victory continued an impressive run in the championship. After winning the Gross Division and placing second in the Net Division at the inaugural event in 2025, the Welches returned this year to improve on last season's performance by capturing both titles.
The duo will have little time to celebrate, as they'll return to action on August 17 at Springdale Golf Club in the New Jersey Golf Father & Son Championship, looking to carry their momentum into another family championship.
“I think we'll take the same approach. Two balls in the fairway, two balls on the green, and pick the closest birdie putt,” said Jason Welch. “We look forward to being there on the 17th.”
