Iwan Comes From Behind to Win 67th Pre-Senior Championship

HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. –– David Iwan, of Rumson Country Club won the 67th Pre-Senior Championship with a 5-over par (75-74, 149).

“I'm a little surprised,” Iwan said. “But I grinded it out today. I made a lot of putts, a lot of good comeback putts. I didn’t hit it as well as yesterday, but I got the ball in the hole.”

With a 2-over final round, Iwan, who started the day four-back from the lead, pulled off late heroics on his back nine to take home the championship.

“I'm proud of the fact that I stayed in it,” Iwan said after the win. “It was a good battle. I didn’t look at scores throughout the day, and just kept telling myself, ‘one shot at a time.’”

Iwan played the back nine of Royce Brook at even-par over both days of the tournament.

“I grinded well on the back nine,” Iwan remarked. “The putting was really important. I made a lot of key putts that kept the momentum going.”

Iwan played a solid final round, with two birdies and 12 pars at Royce Brook Country Club, which played 6,527-yards on Tuesday.

With a final birdie on No. 18, the 495-yard par 5, Iwan sealed the championship at 5-over par.

“I hit a good approach on the front left and then hit a good lag putt,” Iwan recalled of the last hole. “I didn’t score very well on the par fives here in general, so it was nice to get a birdie on the last hole.”

Rounding out second place was Brian Komline, who shot 7-over par (71-80, 151) and in third was Phil Ries at 9-over par (74-79, 153).
