New Jersey Golf Faces GAP in 64th Compher Cup at Lancaster Country Club
LANCASTER, PA — New Jersey Golf will square off against the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) on Thursday, April 30, at Lancaster Country Club for the 64th playing of the Compher Cup Match.
Last season, GAP claimed a 10–8 victory at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, N.J., and enters this year’s match holding the overall series advantage at 42–15–5.
For the competition, each association fields a team of 12 of its top amateur golfers who compete in simultaneous Four-Ball (team) and individual matches. Each match is worth one point, with 18 total points available. Matches ending in a tie award a half-point to each side. The team with the most points wins the Cup, while a tie means the defending champions retain it.
The Compher Cup dates back to 1962 and is named in honor of former New Jersey State Golf Association president Frederic Compher, who donated the trophy and envisioned an annual inter-association match to promote camaraderie and spirited competition between the regions. The event has been contested every year since, with the exception of 2020.
This year’s New Jersey Golf squad features a blend of experienced competitors and proven performers from across the state. Leading the lineup is reigning New Jersey Golf Player of the Year Troy Vannucci (Little Mill Country Club), who continues to be a cornerstone of the side following another standout season. He is joined by a deep and balanced roster that includes James Arbes (Watchung Valley Golf Club), Jason Bataille (Raritan Valley Country Club), Anthony Campanile (Deal Golf & Country Club), Austin Devereux (Manasquan River Golf Club), Doug Ergood (Tavistock Country Club), John Havay, Craig Langslet (Hackensack Golf Club), Eric LeFante (Somerset Hills Country Club), Clifford Lindholm (Montclair Golf Club, and Sean Vowells (Canoe Brook Country Club).
The visiting GAP team brings its own formidable lineup, featuring a mix of seasoned veterans and rising talent from one of the nation’s strongest regional associations.
